4-Methylmorpholine-N-oxide(NMMO) is a solvent with strong solubility for cellulose. It exists in crystalline solid or liquid form at room temperature, is non-toxic and weakly alkaline, and is widely used in the following fields:
Production of artificial fibers:
NMMO is the core solvent for Lyocell fibers(Tencel). Compared to traditional carbon disulfide solvents, its production process is non-toxic, energy-efficient, and the product has high wet strength and excellent environmental performance. This solvent can dissolve cellulose to form spinning solution, which is then spun into high-performance regenerated cellulose fibers through dry jet wet spinning. ‌
Catalysts and oxidizers:
In organic synthesis, NMMO can serve as a non-metallic catalyst to promote the cyanosilane reaction of ketones, and as a co oxidant to participate in the asymmetric dihydroxylation reaction of ionic liquid systems under mild reaction conditions. ‌
Special solvent applications:
NMMO has the ability to dissolve hard proteins(such as crystal regions containing glycine and alanine residues) and can disrupt their hydrogen bond structures. In addition, its strong hygroscopicity plays a crucial role in the preparation of enzyme immobilization carriers, by treating bamboo cellulose to obtain enzyme carriers with high adsorption rates.
