Application

 

1. 2-Methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (MIT) is a highly effective, broad-spectrum biocide and preservative used in personal care products such as shampoos, conditioners, body washes, lotions, and facial cleansers to prevent microbial growth and extend shelf life . It is approved for use in rinse-off products at a maximum concentration of 100 ppm (0.01%) .
2. MIT CAS 2682-20-4 serves as a preservative in industrial applications including adhesives, coatings, paints, metalworking fluids, resin emulsions, fuels, and wood products, where it prevents spoilage by controlling bacteria, fungi, and algae .
3. In industrial process water systems, MIT is used to control slime-forming bacteria and algae in pulp/paper mills, cooling water systems, oil field operations, and air washer systems .
4. The compound is employed as an antimicrobial preservative in household cleaning products, including detergents, laundry detergents, wet wipes, and disinfectants . In combination with 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (CIT) or benzisothiazolinone (BIT), synergistic antimicrobial activity is achieved at lower concentrations .

 

Storage and Precautions

 

1. 2-Methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one must be stored in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, protected from light and moisture; recommended storage at 2-8°C (refrigerated) .
2. MIT CAS 2682-20-4 is classified with GHS hazard statements H301+H311 (Toxic if swallowed or in contact with skin), H314 (Causes severe skin burns and eye damage), H317 (May cause an allergic skin reaction), H330 (Fatal if inhaled), and H410 (Very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects), with signal word "Danger" .
3.
